We know by now not to pour oil down the drain because it builds up and can cause blocked drains.
So what is the best way to get rid of the oil?
There are a number of options to choose from depending on the type of oil being disposed of.
If possible, let the oil solidify. It can then be placed in the bin or in the compost. Wipe excess from the pan using a paper towel and throw it in the bin.
Pour used oil that has cooled into a container. Leave the container in a kitchen cupboard and when full throw it in the bin. If it will harden in the fridge you can place it there first before disposing of it in the bin.
Reusing the oil is also an option before you dispose of it. Sometimes certain oils can be used again so follow instructions to ensure your health is not jeopardised and then when it is finally time to get rid of it either put it in the compost or bin.
So the real message is NEVER PUT OIL DOWN THE SINK. Not only is it extremely bad for the environment and our waterways, it can clog up drains and be very expensive for you in the long run.
